The National Lawyers Guild calls for an immediate halt to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza and demands that the U.S. government immediately cease all aid to Israel. The NLG calls for further action by the U.N. Security Council, General Assembly, and Human Rights Council to protect the civilian population of Gaza, to oppose the bombardment, and to oppose any further escalation.

“Israel cannot rely on the cloak of self-defense to justify these ongoing attacks,” said NLG President Azadeh Shahshahani. “Occupying and settling Palestinian land by force, enforcing a blockade and siege of Gaza, assassinating Palestinian leaders, and periodically bombarding and invading both Gaza and the West Bank make Orwellian the Israeli government’s claims of self-defense. And yet the U.S. government trumpets this narrative, giving Israel carte blanche to go on killing Palestinian civilians.”

A timeline of events <http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/how-israel-shattered-gaza-truce-leading-escalating-death-and-tragedy-timeline> contradicts official Israeli government reports that cite Palestinian rocket fire as the first breach of the recently brokered ceasefire and the justification for Israeli attacks on Gaza.

As a cooperating attorney with the Seattle Chapter of the NLG, Neil Fox is currently representing The Stranger in motions to unseal the files in two pending federal grand jury cases where two young "recalcitrant witnesses" have been jailed for contempt when they refused to testify (Matthew Duran and Katherine Olejnik).  Additionally, The Stranger has filed a motion to unseal a search warrant and supporting papers, which outline the details of the FBI investigation of anarchists in the Pacific Northwest.  The Government initially filed the warrant and affidavit on the website of the federal court.  Then, after two media outlets published stories about the warrant, the Government promptly moved to have the file sealed.  The Stranger has filed a motion to unseal the warrant file, raising an argument that once the "cat was out of the bag" the file no longer could be sealed.  It is not clear when the judges involved will issues rulings on the pending motions.

PROGRAM: JUVENILES IN IMMIGRATION PROCEEDINGS What happens to underage children in the U.S. without documents? Does it make a difference if their parents aren’t in the U.S? What happens to children when their parents are detained? Who takes care of them while their immigration case is being decided? How does the immigration foster care system work? Is there a juvenile detention center for undocumented youth? Can unaccompanied minor children get “green cards”? How does the Deferred Action for “Dreamers” work?

A panel of experts from Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, Catholic Community Services and the Selma Carson Home will address these and other questions at the November meeting of the Northwest Detention Center Roundtable.
